One of the drawbacks of the seafaring profession is considered to be the limited ability of the seafarer to communicate and stay in touch with family and friends while on board. However, in the last few years the situation in this field has rapidly changed.  The use of satellite phones, which are available aboard all ships that sail in the open seas, has helped to improve communication.
