Rowan Women’s Basketball Wins Home Opener, 75-68 Over Delaware Valley

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team defeated Delaware Valley University, 75-68 in its home opener on Wednesday night.

The Profs have started the campaign 3-0 and this was the first contest of the season for the Aggies. Guard/forward Kaitlin Schullstrom (gr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) poured in 16 points. Forward Kate Matthews (gr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. GuardValerie Garofalo (sr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) and guard/forward Ashanti Bishop(jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) each tallied 11 points.

For Delaware Valley, guard Eireann Anastasi (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Saint Hubert) compiled 15 points and 10 rebounds. Guard/forward Danielle Skedzielewski (fr. Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) contributed with 15 points and eight boards. Center Sam Foy (jr. Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) chipped in with 12 points and nine rebounds. Guard/forward Brianna Rivello (fr. Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) added 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Rowan jumped out to 7-1 advantage with 6:04 to play in the first quarter. Delaware Valley then used a 15-4 run to take a 16-11 lead at the 1:05 mark. Foy recorded six points, Anastasi had five and Skedzielewski, four. Guard Olivia Rulon (fr. Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) hit a three-pointer (0:52) to cut the deficit to two points (16-14), but Anastasi sank two free throws with 33-seconds remaining to make the score 18-14 after the first.

In the second quarter, the Profs tied the score at 20 after a jumper by Garofalo (7:19). The game was tied at 22 (6:40), but a triple by Schullstrom gave Rowan a 25-22 advantage (6:08). The Profs led 28-25 then the Aggies recorded four straight on layups by Rivello (1:40) and Skedzielewski (0:47) to go out in front 29-28. Schullstrom hit a jumper (0:30) and Bishop made a free throw (0:17), putting Rowan on top 31-29. Foy nailed a jumper with four-seconds on the clock, tying the game at 31 heading into the break.

The third quarter had five ties and 10 lead changes. The score was tied at 50 with 1:33 to play. Skedzielewski hit a jumper (1:18) for a 52-50 Aggie lead. Schullstrom netted a triple (1:07) and Bishop scored a layup (0:47) to put Rowan ahead 55-52. Skedzielewski then made two free throws with nine-seconds on the clock, sending the game into the final quarter with the Profs up 55-54.

Rowan extended its lead to 58-54 on a triple (9:35) by guard Summer Crilley (so. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit). Delaware Valley scored four straight to tie the score at 58 (8:48). The score was then knotted at 64 (3:59), 66 (3:20) and 68 (1:54). The Profs recorded the final seven points of the game on a free throw by Garofalo (1:14), a layup by Matthews (0:51) and four straight free throws by Schullstrom in the final 13-seconds.

Rowan continues its three-game home stand on Saturday, Nov. 21 against Immaculata University at 1 p.m.
