Rowan Women’s Basketball Wins Fourth Straight To Open Season, 99-59 Over Immaculata

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s basketball team won its fourth straight game to open the season, 99-59 over Immaculata University on Saturday afternoon.

The Mighty Macs have a record of 0-3. Guard/forward Kaitlin Schullstrom (gr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) scored a career-high 24 points, grabbed six rebounds and had three steals for the Profs. Guard/forward Melissa Lake (gr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and guard Summer Crilley (so. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) netted 12 points apiece. Forward Kate Matthews (gr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) corralled 13 rebounds and scored nine points. Guard Ashley Bird (fr. Belford, NJ/Middletown N.) tallied nine points in her first collegiate action.

For Immaculata, guard Reilly Larkin (sr. Sea Isle City, NJ/Ocean City) collected 18 points. Guard Gina Cocci (so. Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert) chipped in with 10 points. Forward Theresa Walsh (so. Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) added nine points and 10 rebounds.

Rowan scored the first 11 points of the game, including five points by Schullstrom and four by Lake and two by guard Valerie Garofalo (jr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) (7:15). The Profs expanded their advantage to 14 points (16-2) after a jumper by Matthews (6:28). Immaculata cut the deficit to nine (16-7) at the 5:40 mark on a three-pointer by Larkin. Rowan then used a 9-2 spurt to extend its lead to 25-9 with 1:15 remaining. Larkin hit two free throws (0:04) to make the score 25-11 after the first quarter.

Center Morgan Wentz (fr. Leola, PA/Conestoga Valley) began the second quarter with a basket for the Mighty Macs (8:57), but the Profs tallied six straight for a 31-13 lead. Rowan’s lead ballooned to 23 points after a layup by Schullstrom (5:46). Crilley’s jumper made the score 41-15 at the 4:10 mark. Rowan went into the break with a 51-26 advantage.

Rowan recorded the first five points of the third session to go up 56-26 (8:30). Immaculata cut the lead to 21 (63-42) on a jumper by guard Elizabeth McBride (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy) with 2:15 left. The Profs scored the final nine points of the quarter and led 72-42 heading into the fourth. Rowan continued its run, tallying 13 consecutive points at the beginning of the fourth for its largest lead of 43 points (85-42) at 5:50.

Rowan opens New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, Nov. 24 as it hosts Stockton University at 6 p.m.
