The Lifestyle of A Modern Day Travel Writer

Johnny Jet has visited almost 100 countries and has traveled over 100,000 miles per year since he started his newsletter in 1995, which later became his popular website, JohnnyJet.com.

On JohnnyJet.com, he writes about all things travel, from how to find cheap flights and how to maximize your credit card points to where he is, what he’s doing and what he can recommend.

He was recently named one of Forbes’ Top 10 Travel Influencers for 2017, and recently hosted a TV special on The Travel Channel. He now appears every Saturday on Leo Laporte’s The Tech Guy Show talking about travel and technology and travels the world with his wife Natalie DiScala, who writes the travel + style blog Oh! Travelissima, and their son Jack.

I virtually sat down with Johnny to quiz him on what he does every day, and how he’s managed to develop such an amazing following and lifestyle for himself.

Q: What does a typical day in the life of Johnny Jet involve?

I don’t have a typical day, that’s the best thing about having a travel website and working for myself.

When I’m on the road, I’m usually up early. I have breakfast, tour around the area where I am and then go to my room to work. It’s not that glamourous when I’m at home because I work 18 hours day. It’s a lot more luxurious when I’m on the road.

I also spend a lot of time with my family. My wife is in the same business, and we take turns to watch my son. I spend a lot of time with him. At least 10 hours every day.

  1. What’s the best thing about your lifestyle?

That I don’t have to wake up to an alarm clock. I do what I want to do and work where I want to work. I mean, I could be in Hawaii right now.

I feel very fortunate about how I live.

  1. What’s the worst thing?

That I don’t have a routine.

I’m always in a rush because I have so much work to do, and I know it’s not good to think this way, but I’m always thinking about whether I could be somewhere nicer or better.

I’m away from family and friends a lot, too.

  1. Why do you think more people aren’t living this sort of lifestyle?

Some people do try it.

In fact, most people see the photos on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, and think this lifestyle is easy. But they don’t realize how much hard work it involves and give up before they get any real results.

I work 18 hour days. And you have to do that. Especially when you’re starting out.

I might take 15 minutes during my day to take a great picture when I’m on the road, but most of the time, I’m working.

  1. Where should they begin?

I would recommend networking at conferences, making connections, and writing content people are going to be interested in. Pieces that will help people.

If you put out good info, you will get a following. But you need to do it regularly and consistently.
