Women’s Basketball Drops Puerto Rico Opener To #19 Albright, 72-68

TRUJILLO ALTO, PR – The Rowan University women’s basketball team suffered a 72-68 loss to Albright College in the Puerto Rico Clasico on Wednesday afternoon.

The Profs have an 8-3 record on the year while the Lions up their mark to 8-2. Albright is ranked 19th in the latest Top 25 Poll.

Five Lions scored in double figures led by guard Shannon Thomas (sr. Dallastown, PA/Dallastown) with 18. Guard/forward Alysha Lofton (jr. Warrington, PA/Central Bucks S.) registered a double-double with 16 points and 17 rebounds. Guard/forward MiKayla Lea (so. West Lawn, PA/Berks Catholic) contributed with 12 points and five boards off the bench. Forward/center Devan Horka (jr. Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) and guard Nina Mazzarelli (jr. West Chester, PA/West Chester E.) each tallied 10 points.

Guard Valerie Garofalo (sr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) paced Rowan with 17 points and five rebounds. Guard Anyssa Sanchez (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/Sterling) added 11 points and five boards. Guard Summer Crilley (jr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) and center April Szymczyk (jr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) chipped in with seven points apiece.

Thomas sank a three to give the Lions a 66-56 advantage with 3:22 remaining. Garofalo hit a triple (3:10) and Sanchez had a layup (2:40) and the Profs were down 66-61. Mazzarelli converted a pair of foul shots (2:34) before Szymczyk’s layup (1:50) and guard/forward Alex Raring‘s (jr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) three-point play (1:21) made the score 68-66. Mazzarelli registered two more free throws and Albright led 70-66 (1:10). Crilley made a layup to get the Profs within two at the 20-second mark. Guard Jane Joyce (jr. Scranton, PA/West Scranton) nailed two shots at the line for the final points (0:09).

Rowan had an 8-4 lead with 5:33 to go in the opening quarter. The Lions went on a 15-2 run to go ahead 19-10 (2:55). Four different players scored in the span. Albright had a nine-point cushion (29-20) with 6:05 left in the second. The Lions increased their advantage to 15 (35-20) with 3:45 on the clock after layups by Mazzarelli, Horka and Lofton. They had a 37-25 lead at the break.

Albright maintained a double-digit margin throughout most of the third quarter. Its largest lead was 16 (51-35) with 3:37 left. Rowan followed with a 9-0 surge to end the period. Four different Profs recorded points in the stretch. Forward Kailyn Systma (fr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) drilled a three to cut the deficit to four (51-47) to start the fourth. Horka’s layup (9:45) ended the Profs’ run and the teams traded points until Thomas’ three set up the final minutes.

Rowan closes out its Puerto Rico slate against Berry College (GA) on Thursday, Dec. 29 at 1 p.m.
